Late Effects in Children with Wilms Tumor Treated on the COG ARENO Studies

The survival rate for children with renal tumors now exceeds 85%. As a result, recent studies have shifted their focus to addressing the long-term impacts of therapy. The National Wilms Tumor Studies 1–5 (NWTSG) documented significant late events and effects of treatment. The Children’s Oncology Group Renal Tumor (ARENO) studies were designed not only to improve event-free and overall survival, but also to develop regimens that reduce the late events and effects previously reported in the NWTSG studies. However, data on late effects and outcomes beyond five years were not collected in the ARENO studies. Comprehensive longitudinal data on how the ARENO protocol changes have influenced the incidence and timing of late effects remain limited. The aim of this study is to therefore describe the late effects observed in adolescent survivors of Wilms tumor (WT) who were treated on the ARENO renal tumor studies, and to compare these findings to historical data published from the NWTSG studies. By leveraging long-term survivorship data from PSORC centers, the findings from this study will inform future risk-adapted therapeutic strategies and survivorship guidelines.
